My family recently went on a local adventure where we took the Anderson Ferry to CVG to be able to watch planes take off and land from the CVG Airplane Viewing Area and, along the way, spent some time Geocaching (details below).
We spent a couple of hours on this morning adventure and it cost us a mere $10 (since we took the Ferry to and from)
Anderson Ferry
Continuously operated since 1817, the Anderson Ferry (Nationally Registered US Historic Site) has transported everything from horses, carriages, bicycles, and vehicles across the Ohio River for the past 200+ years.
The ferry connects Anderson Ferry Road on the Ohio side to Kentucky Route 8 on the Kentucky side, and its location makes it a fun, historic (and efficient!) alternative to getting to CVG.
Cost: $5 one-way for cars. You can also purchase rides in bulk for occasional and daily travelers.
Geocaching everywhere
Geocaching is a FREE outdoor recreational activity in which participants use a GPS receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called geocaches or caches, at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world.
There are over 3 million active caches worldwide and we looked for containers along our Saturday morning adventure route. There were one each on the Ohio and Kentucky sides of the Anderson Ferry, as well as on the grounds of the CVG Airplane Viewing Area.

CVG Airplane Viewing Area
The CVG Viewing Area is a designated scenic spot where you can watch planes take off and land at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG).
There are picnic tables, a play area, and excellent views of the airfield, which makes it a wonderful family-friendly activity. Simply pack a picnic and spend some time taking in activity at the airfield for free.
