(October 8, 2016)
For our inaugural Monthiversary Meal, we decided to give The Elusive Cow in Bellevue a try.
I opted against getting a beer, partly because nothing on tap really stood out (the selection is pretty decent between draft, cans, and bottles), but also because I don’t love drinking beer when I eat a hearty meal (I prefer using stomach space for food and not beer, like a real grown up). I obviously ordered a burger and [cheese] fries, while BK got a chicken salad sandwich with kale slaw. But first, we got chicken wings with Caribbean jerk sauce to try for an appetizer.
The wings were very good — fried and crispy, meaty, and the sauce was a little spicy but good. Ranch was above average, too. The burger was fine. The meat was obviously very good quality (as are most of their ingredients), but I didn’t love the cheese choices (no American or pepperjack, and I don’t love cheddar on my burgers, which I ended up going with), and the kaiser bun wasn’t my favorite. The fries though! Definitely the standout of the meal. Think fresh-cut fair fries. They were awesome.
Overall it was a fine experience and the service was good, but I think I would opt for something other than a burger in the future. I’m glad I got to try Elusive Cow and will likely return.
Some background
Every month on our around the day we got married (the 8th), we decided to challenge ourselves to try somewhere new. This seems easy enough, but we want to be sure that we are still exploring, trying new places, and essentially still dating each other, even now as an old married couple.

In 2013, after about six months of dating, I started Tour de Cincinnati. I set out on a journey to try a new place or restaurant every week for 52 weeks of that year. I’m happy to report that I achieved that goal in both 2013 and 2014 despite the fact that it got to be pretty expensive and obligatory at times. We got to try so many places in this area and I am thankful for that, but over the past few years we have exhausted ourselves by always trying somewhere new (and not often being able to return to places we like). Making a point to do this once a month is not only a way to commemorate our marriage, but also give us the motivation to get out and explore this great city without breaking the bank.

  1. I love trying new restaurants, so I love this idea! It can get overwhelming when you’re always trying to go somewhere new – my husband will definitely attest to that!
